Parai means “To speak or to communicate”. It is also one of the earliest percussion instruments dating back to prehistoric times and predominantly used in southern India in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Parai Attam dance form is the local dance that Tamil culture enjoys where people beat the drum and dance to its rhythms. Parai music permeates Indian social life from celebrating births to the final funereal journey.
